Continuing the legacy of Fela Kuti
The Chilean band Newen Afrobeat is the pioneer of the genre in Latin America and is currently considered one of the references for the genre in the world.
Over the last 15 years, Newen Afrobeat has carved out a prominent place in the world music, jazz, and global Afrobeat scenes. Their journey includes standout performances at major festivals such as WOMAD, Glastonbury, Felabration Nigeria, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, to name but a few, along with tours across more than 20 countries throughout Latin America, North America, Africa, and Europe.
With 5 studio album and their belt, including their acclaimed EP “Newen Plays Fela”, an outstanding reversions of some of Fela Kuti’s classics such as the popular “Opposite People” (14 million reproductions make it the most viewed afrobeat video in the world on youtube), they gained the respect from the pioneers of the genre and have collaborated with legends such as Tony Allen, Femi Kuti, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Seun Kuti, Oghene Kologbo and Dele Sosimi to name a few.
In 2024, the band, considered one of the top bands in Latin America, celebrated 15 years with the release of the Album Grietas, an innovative album that blends Afrobeat with elements of highlife, jazz, dub, Latin, funk, rock, and soul, with Newen Afrobeat’s freshness and unique stamp.
